Aligned is an educational game developed by the Department of Chemistry and the Advanced Research Computing Centre at UCL. It's a timed puzzle game using real chemicals as game pieces to teach 10 - 18 year olds about organic semi conductors. I worked with UCL's scientists to create Aligned's brand, UI and puzzle pieces.
Aligned Brand and UI design
Graphic design for gaming has been an interest of mine for a while and I was delighted by the opportunity to work with UCL on this project.
Starting with the brand, I focused on two main elements of the game to inform the visual identity: Electricity and the hexagonal grid. I incorporated the theme of electricity into the colour palette, experimenting with bright, glowing colours. With the logo, I wanted to emphasise the electron symbol, distinguishing it from the rest of logo, while still being able to read ‘aligned’. I created contrast by utilitising lower and upper cases and by placing the symbol on a hexagon that overlays the rest of the logo. The ‘e-’ hexagon also acts as a short-form icon for the app or web icon.
Below is a preview of the final product, you can also play the game here.
